Karl Hetzler

Karl Hetzler was born and raised in Fall River, MA, where he still lives today.  He and his wife of 39 years, Susan, also a life-long resident, raised daughters Kristin and Lindsay in Fall River, and the city has always been home to his business, H&S Tool and Engineering, now located in the Industrial Park after starting as a modest operation on Quequechan Street in 1980.  As President and co-founder of H&S, he employs a team of highly skilled machinists, many of whom attended Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School just as Karl did.

Hetzler received his early education in the Fall River Public School system and later followed in his father's footsteps to study machine shop. After graduating from Diman in 1978, he went on to receive his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Southeastern Massachusetts University (now UMASS Dartmouth).  He received Diman's Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002 and was inducted into the Diman Hall of Fame three years later. He was also named UMASS Dartmouth Entrepreneur of the Year in 2005.

In 1990, Hetzler was appointed to the Machine Shop Advisory Board at Diman Regional. He served in that capacity for sixteen years and was later appointed, by Mayor Edward Lambert, to the Regional School Committee where he served for six more years, five  of those as Chairman. He also served as co-Chair of the Building Oversight Committee for the new Kuss Middle School which was completed in 2009.  His passion for education has earned him recognition from the Massachusetts Association of School Committees several times over; Hetzler received a Community Leader Award in 2002, an All State Award in 2008, and a Lifetime Achievement award in 2012.

Always a proponent of bringing jobs to the city, he served on the Fall River Office of Economic Development Board from 1996 to 2003.  He also served on the Board of the Fall River Area Chamber of Commerce for nine years, and was Chairman in 2001 and 2002. After moving his business to the Fall River Industrial Park in 2009, Hetzler joined the Industrial Park Association (FRIPA) and has served as the group's President since 2013.

Recognizing the vital role that local hospitals play in the well-being of the community, Hetzler served on the St. Anne's Hospital Board of Trustees from 2004 to 2018 and was a member of several sub committees including the Patient Care Assessment Committee and the Development Committee.  He was co-Chair of the Hospital's 2007 Capital Campaign which raised much needed money for equipment and expansion.

He was intimately involved in the Fall River Celebrates America Festival for more than ten years and twice served as the Chairman of the event. Other organizations that he has had or continues to have involvement with include: Smiles Mentoring, Junior Achievement, PAL Girls Softball League, the Industrial Softball League, and the St. Anthony of the Desert Parish Council and Scholarship committee. Hetzler is also a member of The Bank Five Board of Directors and recently served on the Community Outreach Committee for the approval and building of a new Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School.
