GMSC! June 2019 Breakfast
At this interactive Good Morning SouthCoast! Breakfast we will focus on the academic success, achievements and the hardships that lie ahead for public schools throughout New Bedford. Our keynotes speakers will share their respective commitments to innovation and how it will improve academic outcomes for New Bedford Students.
Mr. Thomas Anderson, Superintendent of New Bedford Public Schools, and Mr. William Gardner, Founder & Director of Alma del Mar Charter School, will discuss future plans, missed opportunities and challenges faced in offering access to effective learning opportunities for every child in New Bedford.

Mr. Thomas Anderson
Thomas Anderson is the newly appointed superintendent of the New Bedford School District, with more than fifteen years of administration experience in five school systems. Mr. Anderson earned his bachelor’s at the University of Rhode Island and his Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction at Howard University, going on to become a teacher, administrator, and principal in Montgomery County, Maryland, a district exceeding 150,000 students. Soon after, he founded the Edison Learning Larry Hawkins Chicago International Charter School, a south-side Chicago charter school. Ninety-eight percent of the first class graduated. Mr. Anderson served at Randolph Public Schools for three years, during which the district exited “underperforming” status. Mr. Anderson is also an accomplished speaker, and on several occasions has served as a guest presenter for graduate students completing student-teaching at Chicago’s DePaul University. As superintendent of NBPS, one of Mr. Anderson’s goals is to focus on upping secondary schools’ graduation rates.
Mr. William Gardner
Will Gardner graduated from Wesleyan University and began his teaching career as a Teach for America corps member in Greenville, Mississippi. In Mississippi, Will served as an elementary school music teacher and later as a 3rd grade teacher in a program for students behind in reading. Following five years in Mississippi, Will returned to his home state of Massachusetts to run an out of school time site for Citizen Schools in New Bedford. While running a Citizen Schools site for middle school students, Will saw firsthand how too many students in New Bedford enter middle school unprepared to succeed at the high levels that a college track demands. At the same time, he witnessed that students can be reignited academically when challenged to do rigorous, meaningful and service-oriented work. The desire to see more students doing incredible work and to put more kids in New Bedford on the path to college led Will to complete Harvard’s School Leadership program and dedicate two years to creating Alma del Mar.
This special breakfast program is not a typical Chamber event. Instead, we've created a high-profile, fast-paced, and educational breakfast program specifically geared towards executives, senior managers, professionals, decision makers and other business people in the community. Good Morning SouthCoast! is one of the Chamber's most anticipated events due to the diverse topics discussed and the vital information they offer to the business community and residents alike.
