Maria Lawton was born on the semi-tropical island of Sao Miguel in the village called Rosario de Lagoa. When she was six her family moved permanently to the United States and settled in southeastern Massachusetts.
Growing up in a three-family house in the city of New Bedford, Maria loved watching her Mother and Grandmother create amazing traditional Azorean dishes. If her Mother wasn't cooking on the first floor she could be sure to go upstairs and find her grandmother baking something on the second floor. The enchanting smells of the traditional dishes enticed Maria to frequently travel up and down the stairs tasting from their pans. Despite her Mother's apprehensions of people watching her cook, Maria regularly looked over her Grandmother's shoulder has she prepared recipes and baked in the kitchen.
As Maria's own family began to grow she wanted to capture the recipes of her childhood and share this rich culture with children. She traveled back Sao Miguel where she learned from her Aunt and cousins how to prepare and master the traditional recipes she grew up relishing.
In 2014, Maria Lawton released her debut book, "Azorean Cooking, From my family table to yours". Since then, "Azorean Cooking, from my family table to yours" has become a best-seller in both the United States and Canada and is available both on Amazon Kindle and hard copy. Maria takes pride in the fact that her book celebrates Azorean Heritage, Tradition, and family and is now be shared all over the world!
